…I say the best part of the harvest is hitting your target” and damn, we just hit our target: all 10 songs planned for our debut are now fully mixed and ready for mastering! That’s pretty mind blowing to write, I must say. If you had asked me just a year ago what I would be doing musically in 2011, I definitely would not have imagined the impending release of a full length electro pop/house/trance/hip hop album and yet, here we are. Listening back to this record from front to back and replaying in my mind the journey that brought us here is a pretty magical experience and I wish I could somehow tap into my mind to share that journey with you. What I can do is give you a peak into that journey through words. Let’s start at the beginning.
NU.F.O. began on a ferry ride across the Long Island Sound. Epic and I were on our way to a weekend getaway with a few friends of ours and we had nothing but sun, sand and fishing on our minds. At some point during our journey, after we’d had a few drinks at the bar, the conversation inevitably shifted gears towards music. Neither of us were personally doing anything serious with music at the moment (as both of our previous bands were on the rocks) and we started joking around about doing a song or two together, just for fun. As we stood at the edge of the deck looking out at the ocean waves as they crashed against the side of the boat, one of us said something along the lines of “hey man, forget rock n’ roll. Let’s see what we can do with dance music”. We laughed for a bit at that thought but not because it was bad idea; we laughed because it was absolutely brilliant. It took a few months from that moment for the spark of inspiration to take shape in the form of a finished song, but I credit that conversation, and the very memorable laughter that it caused, as the genesis of NU.F.O.
As I sit here writing this blog, listening back to the results of all of the work that we’ve put in over the last 8 months, I find myself laughing the same way that I did that day on the ferry. Because of that, I know that we’ve achieved what we set out to and created something that is, to me at least, absolutely brilliant. I hope you agree.
